Lloyd campaign admits media inquiry prompted delayed assault charge

The campaign of Republican attorney general candidate Doug Lloyd acknowledged that his office did not review an assault case against Timothy Reed until after Metro Times began questioning the prosecutor's record. Lloyd, who has led the Eaton County prosecutor's office since 2013, authorized a new charge against Reed on September 18, 2025, the day after Metro Times contacted the campaign about earlier plea deals.

Reed, the grandson of a former Eaton County prosecutor, was on probation for two prior sexual assault cases involving underage girls when he allegedly assaulted someone on January 11, 2025. Despite being on probation, Reed was released on a $200 bond after prosecutors failed to appear at his bond hearing or mention his probation status to the judge.

Lloyd's campaign attributed the delay to a backlog of more than 3,600 annual cases handled by 11 attorneys. The campaign stated that when media inquiries began, the office reviewed Reed's profile and discovered the pending battery matter, which Reed had admitted to. Lloyd is currently running against Democrat Eli Savit to succeed Attorney General Dana Nessel.
