GM grants $500,000 to launch manufacturing education program for Michigan students
General Motors is providing a $500,000 grant to the American Federation of Teachers Educational Foundation to launch Manufacturing Futures, an initiative designed to connect 2,800 Michigan middle school students annually with advanced manufacturing education and career pathways.
The funding will be split between the Detroit Public Schools Community District and Dearborn Public Schools to support advanced manufacturing labs, classroom technology, and hands-on learning across eight middle schools. The program will equip classrooms with tools such as 3D printers and robotic arms, while also facilitating student visits to high-school career and technical education facilities.
Manufacturing Futures builds on GM’s $50 million commitment to STEAM education in Michigan through 2030. The initiative includes 24 paid high-school student ambassadors who will introduce younger students to manufacturing careers, as well as family engagement nights featuring facility tours and employer speakers.
