AAA urges helmet use as youth e-bike injuries rise

AAA said 55% of Michigan adults have seen children ride e-bikes or e-scooters without helmets, while 78% support helmet requirements for riders.

A medical study cited by AAA found pediatric e-bike and e-scooter injuries increased 7.5-fold from 2023 to 2026. More than a third of injured patients had head or neck injuries, and nearly 7% sustained traumatic brain injuries.

Michigan requires riders under 18 to wear a bicycle helmet that meets national safety standards. AAA recommends that all riders use a properly fitted helmet certified for their device’s speed.
