Afghan protected from Taliban deported to Central African Republic

The United States deported dozens of people to the Central African Republic on Saturday, including an Afghan man whose brothers supported the U.S. military, his lawyer and an advocacy group said.

A U.S. judge had granted the man protection from deportation to Afghanistan because of fears of Taliban persecution. The flight included 12 Afghans, eight Iranians and several people from Nepal and Nicaragua.

The Trump administration has deported thousands of people to countries other than their own under agreements that advocates and immigration lawyers say can bypass protections for asylum seekers. It was the second deportation flight to the Central African Republic since June.
