Ambassador Hoekstra visits Gander to honor 9/11 anniversary
U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra visited the Newfoundland town of Gander on Friday to thank residents for their hospitality during the 9/11 crisis and to mark the 25th anniversary of the event.
Hoekstra praised the community’s generosity, saying, “The terrorist attacks of September 11 left a lasting mark on me and our nation, but during a very dark time, the people of Newfoundland showed us what true community really means.”
The visit follows criticism from some Canadians over Trump’s approach to Canada, but the town council welcomed the ambassador, noting that Gander’s story is about people, not politics.
