Audit finds Michigan voter rolls are nearly complete and accurate

A state Auditor General examination found that 99.99% of entries in Michigan’s Qualified Voter File contain all required data, while 99.7% of records matched information in the state’s driver and vehicle system. The statewide database includes more than 8.3 million registered voters and is maintained by more than 1,600 election officials.

The examination also found that voter-registration cancellations following deaths closely tracked the number of Michigan residents who died. It cautioned that citizenship information in driver and vehicle records is not by itself a reliable measure of voter eligibility because records may not be updated after naturalization.

A new administrative rule allows officials to contact voters who have not cast a ballot in at least 20 years. More than 180,000 registrations are slated for possible future cancellation if voters do not respond, following the federally required process.
