Benson and James trade jabs in final Michigan gubernatorial debate

Jocelyn Benson and John James clashed over health care, data centers, and education in their second and final debate for Michigan governor, hosted by Local 4 on Friday. The candidates also traded familiar accusations, with Benson linking James to President Donald Trump’s policies and James criticizing Benson’s eight years in Lansing leadership.

On health care, Benson highlighted her affordability plan, while James pointed to his work on the Patients Deserve Price Tags Act. The race also featured a dispute over data center development, with Benson accusing James of holding stock in the industry and James citing a Saline project involving Benson and her husband.

James proposed cutting personal income taxes to the threes, while Benson called for a wholesale review of state revenue. In post-debate interviews, Benson acknowledged Democrats had not done enough for public schools, and James argued that voters should not let partisan dislike of Trump dictate their choice for the next eight years.
