Black voters in South face new congressional maps after court ruling

Black voters in Memphis are confronting new congressional districts after Tennessee’s Republican-controlled legislature split the majority-Black city among three districts expected to favor Republicans.

The change followed a late April U.S. Supreme Court decision that weakened Voting Rights Act protections that had helped ensure at least one of Tennessee’s nine congressional districts remained majority Black. Several other Republican-majority Southern states later redrew maps.

Local clergy and advocacy groups are holding voter education efforts, saying some residents remain unsure which district they are now in. Black voters and pastors said the new lines could dilute their political voice in November’s midterm elections.
