Canton parents face charges after child brings loaded gun to daycare
A 3-year-old boy brought a loaded gun to a Canton Township daycare Monday morning. Staff secured it after the child removed it from his backpack and passed it to other children, police said.
The boy’s father, Detroit police officer Brandon John Ely, 28, was charged with fourth-degree child abuse. His mother, Rabab Ibrahim Al Zayad, 27, was charged with unsafe storage. Both were arraigned this week.
The Detroit Police Department placed Ely on administrative duty and barred him from carrying a gun while it reviews the case. The daycare said it disenrolled the family and added safety measures, including bag searches.
