CDC data highlights questions around cannabis-related emergency visits

Preliminary CDC data shows emergency department visits involving Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, or CHS, more than tripled after hospitals began using a diagnosis code for the condition in October 2025. CHS involves cycles of severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain linked to cannabis use, but health officials said the increase may partly reflect improved recognition and coding rather than a sudden rise in illness.

The data identified young people as the most affected group and showed higher proportions among women than men. A Muskegon cannabis business owner said more research is needed to determine whether illness is tied to THC, other product ingredients or unregulated hemp-derived products. The CDC said the preliminary data does not show what products patients used or how they consumed them.
