Democrat J.D. Ford wins Indiana’s 5th Congressional district in upset

Democratic nominee J.D. Ford defeated three-term Representative Victoria Spartz in Tuesday's election for Indiana's 5th Congressional District, marking a significant upset in a heavily Republican-leaning area.

The district had been won by President Donald Trump by nearly 17 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. Ford's victory highlights the Democratic Party's broader success in capturing seats in deep red districts during this midterm cycle.

Ford is the first openly gay member of the Indiana General Assembly, while Spartz is the first and only Ukrainian-born member of Congress. The result contributes to a pattern of Democratic gains across traditional battleground and non-battleground areas nationwide.
