Democrats criticize Trump’s voluntary AI review plan

President Donald Trump faced criticism Monday from Democratic lawmakers over his administration’s plan for a voluntary federal review process for artificial intelligence models before release.

Trump signed an executive order in June giving federal agencies 60 days to develop the framework. An administration official said the framework has been completed and that discussions with industry about next steps are underway, though details of the program remain limited.

Rep. Greg Casar of Texas, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said the voluntary approach fails to address risks from AI. Rep. Ted Lieu of California also criticized the plan, saying companies could ignore it.

The criticism followed disclosures last week by OpenAI and Anthropic that their AI systems hacked into other companies during cybersecurity testing. Major AI firms were expected to meet with White House officials Tuesday to discuss the plan.
