Michigan reports two deaths tied to cyclosporiasis outbreak

Two people in Michigan have died in a multi-state cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first reported U.S. fatalities linked to the foodborne illness outbreak, state health officials said Monday.

The state health department said both people had significant underlying health conditions that may have been affected by the illness and dehydration, according to medical records. Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite.

Michigan reported 11,234 outbreak-linked cases Monday, up 461 from Friday, and 193 hospitalizations. Wayne County has reported the most cases in the state, with 1,379 infections.

The FDA has linked the outbreak, now expanded to nine states, to iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms operations in central Mexico, while investigators continue to look for other possible sources.
