DOJ to deploy federal election monitors to Lansing and East Lansing

The U.S. Department of Justice has notified seven Michigan municipalities, including Lansing and East Lansing, that federal election monitors will be present at polling places on Election Day, November 3.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the notices on Thursday, stating that the monitors are a standard part of the election process and are expected to comply with state and federal law. The other cities receiving notices are Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Hamtramck, and Warren.

State officials, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie, affirmed that Michigan elections remain safe and secure. They noted that federal monitors, typically DOJ attorneys and staff, have participated in previous elections, including the August primary, and are limited to observing the process without interfering with voters or equipment.
