Driver charged after near miss with state police vehicle in northern Michigan

A 41-year-old man faces three charges after Michigan State Police said his car nearly hit a trooper's vehicle during a reckless-driving investigation in Roscommon County.

Troopers responded Tuesday evening to U.S. Highway 127 near Snowbowl Road after a report of a reckless driver. Investigators said the driver hit a kayak being hauled by another vehicle and continued without reporting the collision.

State police said troopers later saw the car heading toward them on Harrison Road, and the law enforcement driver sped up and moved around it to avoid a crash. Troopers also said three vehicles had pulled over to avoid being struck before the driver was stopped and arrested.

The man is charged with operating while intoxicated, reckless driving and failure to stop at the scene of an accident. A judge set bond at $100,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
