East Lansing drops charges against woman Punched by officer
East Lansing city attorneys announced Friday that they will not pursue charges against Myanna Collins, a 20-year-old Black woman whose August 2 arrest drew public attention after video showed an officer punching her while she was face down with her arms restrained.
City Attorney Carlito Young stated in a press release that the decision does not call into question the propriety of the officers’ actions during the arrest. The city defended the officers’ response to a difficult and rapidly evolving situation and noted that one officer was placed on paid administrative leave after the video circulated online.
The East Lansing Police Department said it will release body camera footage from the four officers involved, though it did not specify when the footage would be posted. The city has not released the names of the officers involved in the incident.
