East Lansing health care committee proposal advances toward ballot

A petition drive to create an East Lansing health care committee has gathered enough signatures to move toward the Nov. 3 general election ballot, though City Council approval of ballot language and a state review are still required.

Community Action Michigan led the effort in East Lansing and five other Michigan municipalities. If approved, the seven-member volunteer committee would gather public testimony, analyze data, review effects on health care access and affordability, and issue findings and recommendations every two years.

City Clerk Emily Gordon said compliance concerns tied to the proposal have been addressed, and she expects the City Council to vote on ballot language at a special meeting on Aug. 10.

Community Action Michigan reported $1.4 million in contributions since April 27 and more than $860,000 in spending, with donations from Global Impact Social Welfare Fund, CityScope, Inc. and American Opportunity Action.
