EHD confirmed in deer across four Michigan counties

Michigan wildlife officials confirmed the state’s first cases this year of epizootic hemorrhagic disease in free-ranging white-tailed deer in Branch, Ingham, Jackson and Lenawee counties.

The virus spreads through infected biting midges and cannot pass directly between deer. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said there is no evidence it infects people, pets or other Michigan wildlife, and venison from healthy deer remains safe to eat. Residents can report suspected cases through the DNR’s Eyes in the Field system.
