Missouri map fight returns to Supreme Court before midterm ballot deadline

A battle over Missouri’s congressional districts returned to the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday, with conflicting court rulings leaving voters uncertain which districts and candidates will appear on November ballots. The dispute could affect control of Congress and the future of President Donald Trump’s agenda.

A federal appeals court declined to halt a judge’s order requiring use of a new, Trump-backed map. The decision came a day after the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a Missouri Supreme Court ruling that barred the new districts and reinstated the previous map.

The competing orders have created a deadline problem because federal law requires absentee ballots to be mailed to overseas and military voters by Sept. 19. More than a dozen lawsuits have been filed over the redistricting, while state and federal courts continue to dispute which map should govern the election.
