El-Sayed addresses Muslim identity and campaign issues in Detroit speech

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed discussed Muslim American identity and Islamophobia during a speech Saturday at an Islamic society conference in Detroit. He said Muslim and American identities were not mutually exclusive.

El-Sayed also criticized government spending on overseas military conflicts and said Michigan residents were focused on basic needs such as groceries, gas, infrastructure and literacy. He and Republican Mike Rogers have agreed to televised debates in October.
