Emerging opioid cychlorphine spotted on MSU campus, officials urge vigilance
Michigan State University’s campus health services Director Tim Spedoske warned on Sunday that cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid 10 times more potent than fentanyl, has caused more than 50 deaths in the U.S. Between 2025 and 2026.
Spedoske said the drug is being mixed into other drugs, and that overdose deaths have already occurred in Columbus, Ohio, with five deaths in a 24‑hour period this month.
While Michigan has not yet recorded cychlorphine in overdose surveillance, the Ingham County Health Department and Lansing Syringe Access are preparing to test and provide naloxone to prevent overdoses.
