EPA proposes ozone compliance finding for parts of Michigan

The EPA is proposing to declare parts of southwest and southeast Michigan, including Detroit, Muskegon and Berrien counties, as meeting Clean Air Act ozone standards.

Officials say the move would reflect pollution reductions and ease permitting burdens. Environmental attorney Nicholas Leonard argued the declaration is premature, citing continued ozone exceedances and rising asthma rates near Detroit.

A 30-day public comment period will follow once notices are published in the Federal Register.
