Florida Republican breaks with Trump over immigration crackdown

Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a Florida Republican endorsed by President Donald Trump, said in a campaign ad that some of his immigration enforcement efforts had gone too far. She said Hispanic voters who helped Trump return to the White House felt betrayed.

Salazar has also opposed treating political exiles like criminals and supports a bipartisan House measure that would provide immigrants without criminal histories a route to legal status, without a path to citizenship. Her Democratic opponent, Eliott Rodríguez, criticized the ad and accused her of supporting Trump’s immigration policies.

The break comes as Salazar seeks re-election in November and joins a growing number of Republicans who have publicly challenged the president’s policies.
