Georgetown responds to federal demands on DEI, faculty hiring, and international student policies

The Trump administration’s August 3 letter to U.S. Universities called for changes in affirmative action, faculty hiring, campus protest crackdowns, and grade inflation. Georgetown’s leadership announced it was reviewing the letter, noting its past record of responding to federal pressure and its commitment to Jesuit values.

In 2025 Georgetown eliminated the Young Leaders in Education, Advocacy & Dialogue pre-orientation program and removed DEI language from some webpages, a move that critics say signals a shift away from diversity. Student association senator Ayesha Murtaza expressed concern that the changes made the campus feel less welcoming.

The university also halted CPT approvals for non-curricular work after DHS guidance, threatening international student enrollment. Georgetown opposed Trump administration proposals in July and supported Harvard’s lawsuit over funding freezes, showing its continued commitment to federal policy.
