How Michigan officials protect ballots from registration through counting
Michigan’s decentralized election system relies on county, city and township clerks to administer voting. Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said local clerks program tabulators, issue and process absentee ballots, check signatures and provide unofficial totals to the state after polls close.
Nearly every Michigan vote is cast on paper, and ballots are stored in sealed, approved containers after tabulation. Printed tallies are retained with the ballots, while voting equipment is kept in facilities accessible only to trained election personnel.
Clerks also verify voter information and absentee-ballot signatures. Registration cancellations follow a waiting process for voters whose mail is returned as undeliverable, allowing people away for school, work or military service to remain on the rolls.
