Indiana Democrats rally behind Beau Bayh for secretary of state

Beau Bayh, a 30‑year‑old Indiana Democrat, announced his candidacy for secretary of state last October at Holliday Park in Indianapolis. The son and grandson of former U.S. Senator Evan Bayh and late Senator Birch Bayh, Bayh says he feels pressure to lift Indiana Democrats from a decade of political woes. He cites conversations with mothers, young moms, and schoolchildren as the motivation for his campaign.

Bayh grew up in the Washington area after his father’s 1998 Senate election, and graduated from St. Albans School in 2014. He earned a government major at Harvard, played varsity lacrosse, served in the Marine Corps, and completed Harvard Law School in 2020. After a year as a law clerk for federal appeals court Judge David Hamilton in Bloomington, he moved full‑time to Indiana, obtained a law license, and now works for the five‑attorney firm MacGill PC.

Republican nominee Max Engling has criticized Bayh’s East Coast upbringing, but Bayh counters that his military and legal experience qualify him for statewide office. He says the secretary of state’s role in overseeing election policy is vital to the democratic process, and he is running to do a good job in that office. Supporters like retired medical billing worker June Levey praise his family legacy and hope he can win the seat.
