Ingham County 911 center works to close staffing gap

Ingham County’s 911 center is operating about 30% below its target staffing level, with dispatchers sometimes handling as many as 600 calls a day. The shortage reflects broader challenges in emergency communications, including burnout, low pay and mandatory overtime.

The county shortened dispatcher training from a year to less than six months, raised starting pay to $24 an hour and established a top rate of $33. The center also brought in a therapy dog to help staff manage job-related stress.
