Ingham County schools see record multi-sport participation in 2025-26

The Michigan High School Athletic Association’s eighth Multi‑Sport Participation Survey, completed last spring for the 2025‑26 school year, reported that 45.3 percent of athletes at member high schools participated in two or more sports, with a 73.8 percent response rate from schools. Male athletes accounted for 47.5 percent and female athletes for 42.6 percent of the multi‑sport participants.

Class D schools achieved a record high participation rate of 64.2 percent, the highest among all classes, followed by Class C at 59.5 percent, Class B at 49.0 percent, and Class A at 38.4 percent. In Ingham County, schools such as East Lansing and East Grand Rapids contributed to the overall statewide average, while Lake Leelanau St. Mary topped the Class D list with 95.5 percent of its athletes playing multiple sports.
