James picks state lawmaker DeBoyer as running mate for governor

Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate John James has selected state Rep. Jay DeBoyer, R-Clay Township, as his running mate and choice for lieutenant governor. DeBoyer was first elected to the state House in 2022, previously served as St. Clair County elections clerk, and currently chairs the House Oversight Committee.

James said he chose DeBoyer because he has run a business, served in local government and overseen elections, adding that DeBoyer knows how to work with both parties in the Legislature. As chair of the House Oversight Committee, DeBoyer has repeatedly clashed with Democratic gubernatorial nominee and current Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, including subpoenaing and suing her office for election training materials.

DeBoyer would join James, Attorney General nominee Doug Lloyd and Secretary of State nominee Anthony Forlini on the Nov. 3 general election ballot if nominated by delegates. Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel criticized the pick, saying James chose the most MAGA-aligned candidate available and predicting Democrats would defeat the ticket in November.

Republican Party delegates are set to formally nominate a lieutenant governor candidate at a convention in Mount Pleasant.
