Judge declares mistrial in Lansing man’s manslaughter case
An Ingham County judge declared a mistrial Thursday after jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict in the case against David Gaines Jr., 24, of Lansing. Gaines faces one manslaughter charge in the death of Caleb Alan Shermoe, 20, of Fowlerville.
Prosecutors allege Gaines assaulted Shermoe outside an East Lansing restaurant in January 2025. Shermoe later died from his injuries. The jury was dismissed after both parties consented to the mistrial.
