Lansing police release video from fatal shooting investigation

Lansing police released video Thursday showing the minutes before officers fatally shot Zachary Dunn, 29, on Sept. 23. Police said Dunn was experiencing a mental health crisis. The shooting occurred at an apartment complex on Jolly Road after officers responded to a 911 call about a man with a handgun banging on doors and windows.

Police Chief Rob Backus said the weapon was not real. He said officers tried to negotiate with Dunn and use a Taser before Dunn ran, turned toward officers and pointed the presumed weapon at them. Officers then fired. Six officers who fired rounds have been placed on leave.

Michigan State Police are investigating. Backus said the investigation will go to the Michigan attorney general’s office, followed by an internal police review.
