Ohio gas tax holiday May widen price gap across state line
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 519 on Thursday, creating a 90‑day reduction in fuel taxes that begins this Sunday. The law cuts gasoline taxes by 38.5 cents per gallon and diesel taxes by 47 cents per gallon, a change that should be felt by Southeast Michigan drivers crossing the state line.
Michigan currently collects 52.4 cents per gallon in gasoline taxes, and a Senate bill (SB 1187) was recently referred to the finance, insurance, and consumer protection committee. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer noted that the state has pulled back on the summer blend requirement, a move that could help keep prices from rising further during the summer months.
