Lansing residents question police license-plate camera tracking
Automated license-plate readers are prompting privacy concerns in Lansing after residents discovered their vehicles had been scanned multiple times. A website that compiles data obtained through public-records requests allows drivers to search for their license plates.
Supporters say the cameras help law enforcement locate stolen vehicles, while privacy advocates question the oversight, data protections and continued monitoring of people not suspected of wrongdoing. Michigan lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan bill that would limit how agencies use the technology.
A local group plans to discuss the cameras at a public meeting Aug. 23 and attend an upcoming Lansing City Council meeting to call for ending the city’s contract with the camera company.
