Lansing shop restores Cold War-era M103 heavy tank

Sgt. 1st Class Ian Skidmore, the small shop chief at the Michigan National Guard’s Combined Support Maintenance Shop (CSMS) in Lansing, is leading a restoration of a Cold War-era M103 heavy tank that was previously displayed in Dowagiac.

The restoration effort includes rust removal, sealing openings, repairing missing components, and repainting the exterior with period-appropriate paint. Skidmore’s team fabricated a new engine cover and replaced missing parts to bring the tank back to its original configuration.

The project also coincides with the restoration of an M60 tank and two German artillery pieces that arrived from a closed Lansing armory, providing Soldiers with hands‑on experience and preserving Michigan’s military heritage.
