MSU alerts students to new potent opioid linked to overdose deaths

Michigan State University has warned students about cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid that is about 10 times more potent than fentanyl. The drug has been linked to more than 100 overdose deaths in the United States, including 53 in Tennessee, and has been reported in Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio.

No cases of cychlorphine have yet been reported in Michigan, but the county’s medical examiner’s office recorded 20 drug‑related deaths between January and March. The seven‑county region is on pace to surpass the 120 total deaths seen in 2025.

Spedoske noted that the drug is often laced into other substances and cannot be detected by fentanyl test strips. Narcan is available for free in vending machines at the Union and the Multicultural Center, and an online map lists additional locations across Ingham County.
