Lawmakers weigh AI rules as industry safety concerns grow

Northwest lawmakers from both parties said Congress is unlikely to quickly regulate artificial intelligence, even as company executives and former employees warn about risks from increasingly autonomous systems. President Donald Trump dismissed the concerns as a “hoax.”

Lawmakers also raised practical concerns about electricity-hungry data centers, vehicle-monitoring cameras, privacy and cybersecurity. They differed over how regulation could affect competition but said human oversight and international standards should remain part of any federal approach.
