Liberia accepts first group of U.S. deportees from other countries

Liberia received about 20 migrants deported from the United States on Thursday, including people from Latin America, U.S. officials said. The arrivals marked the latest expansion of the administration’s policy of sending migrants to countries where they have no ties.

A small group resisted leaving the plane after it landed and later returned aboard it, according to a U.S. official. Their whereabouts were unknown.

Liberia has said it plans to accept up to 1,200 third-country deportees over the next year and allow them to apply for asylum. The policy has drawn condemnation from human rights activists, while the administration has defended it as legal and intended to deter illegal immigration.
