Markets edge lower as traders raise bets on a near-term rate hike
U.S. stocks closed slightly lower Friday as investors increased bets that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates soon to combat persistent inflation. The S&P 500 fell 0.2%, the Dow dipped less than 0.1% and the Nasdaq lost 0.5%.
The two-year Treasury yield rose to 4.35% from 4.22% after Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh said short-term rates remain the central tool for addressing inflation and employment. Traders put the chance of a rate increase next month at nearly 58%, up from 35% a day earlier.
The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.72%, while the 30-year yield reached 5.21%. Gap shares rose 12.9% after a stronger quarterly profit report, while Marvell Technology fell 10.3% despite slightly exceeding profit and revenue expectations.
