Michigan tops nation in year-over-year gas price jump

Michigan led the nation with a 56.6% year‑over‑year rise in gasoline prices, according to GasBuddy’s petroleum analysis. The state’s average regular unleaded price reached $4.84 per gallon, well above the national average of $4.47. Gas prices nationwide climbed 41% from a year ago, or $1.30 per gallon.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, reported that Americans have spent an additional $71 billion on gasoline and $41 billion on diesel since March 1, a combined $116.1 billion. Michigan also logged the largest week‑over‑week increase in gasoline prices earlier this month. The current average is slightly lower than yesterday’s but up from last week’s $4.54 and a month ago’s $4.26.

Mid‑grade fuel averages $5.47 per gallon and premium $6.07, while diesel averages $6.89, up from $3.20 a year ago. Neighboring Indiana posted the second‑lowest regular unleaded average at $3.98, and California remains the highest at $6.20. The price surge is a tangible cost‑of‑living impact for Michigan residents.
