MSU anthropology team works to identify remains found in Lansing

A Michigan State University anthropology team is collaborating with the Lansing Police Department to identify human remains discovered near Grand River Avenue in September. The medical examiner’s office determined the remains are several years old, prompting a joint investigation to determine the identity and cause of death of the individual.

Joseph Hefner, an associate professor of anthropology and forensic anthropologist at MSU, leads the team, which includes faculty, PhD students, and a postdoctoral researcher. The group was called to the scene on September 26, where they documented the site before moving the remains to a laboratory for detailed analysis.

The team is currently developing a biological profile to estimate the individual’s age, sex, and stature, while also conducting trauma analysis on the bones. Hefner noted that the process is complex and time-consuming as the team balances multiple cases, with no specific timeline for concluding the investigation.

Residents with information about the case are encouraged to contact the Lansing Police Department at 517-483-4660 or Crime Stoppers at 517-483-7867.
