Partial eclipse, Perseid peak offer Michigan skywatching this week

Michigan skywatchers could see a small partial solar eclipse Wednesday afternoon as the moon passes between Earth and the sun. Coverage will be limited in the state, with about 7% of the sun covered in Sault Ste. Marie and about 3% in Detroit.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks the following night. The annual shower happens as Earth passes through debris left behind by a comet, with tiny particles heating up as they enter the atmosphere.

Under ideal conditions, viewers could see up to 100 meteors an hour, and no telescope is needed.
