Primary wins sharpen Democratic debate over the party’s future
Republicans cast recent victories by progressive Democratic Senate candidates as evidence of extremism, while some Democrats said the party should welcome a debate over its direction.
Sen. Tim Scott called the Democratic left wing “dangerous, radical, and, frankly, weird.” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said Angie Nixon’s nomination in Florida could motivate Republicans to vote against her policies.
Democrats Jake Auchincloss and Chris Van Hollen said progressive voters do not want a return to the pre-Trump status quo. They argued that the Democratic Socialists of America should be part of discussions about the party’s future.
