Senate Republicans challenge Jack Smith over records gathered in Trump probes

Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans questioned former special counsel Jack Smith over campaign finance records and cellphone data his office obtained during its investigations of Donald Trump. The FBI obtained data on eight Republican senators’ phone use from Jan. 4 to 7, 2021, the committee said, and lawmakers also raised questions about records involving Republican groups dating as far back as 2019.

Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley accused Smith’s team of pursuing records beyond its stated focus on Jan. 6. Smith said he stood by his testimony to Congress and rejected threats of prosecution. A House Judiciary Committee criminal referral over his testimony was sent to the Justice Department over the summer.

Smith brought two federal cases against Trump, one involving classified documents and another alleging election interference. Both cases were dropped after Trump won the 2024 election, and Smith later resigned as special counsel.
