Sterling Heights man gets life sentence for killing girlfriend

A Sterling Heights man was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2023 murder of his girlfriend, Dhoua Lao, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said.

A jury found 45-year-old Martin Yost guilty of first-degree premeditated murder in June. Prosecutors said he beat Lao to death on Nov. 13, 2023, and police later found him unconscious in a vehicle with Lao dead in the passenger seat.

Michigan Department of Corrections records show Yost had prior domestic violence convictions in 2015 and 2020. Lao was the mother of two daughters.
