Stevens backs El-Sayed after Michigan Democratic Senate primary loss
Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Abdul El-Sayed after narrowly losing last week’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters.
Stevens said Tuesday that supporting El-Sayed meant accepting the will of Democratic voters, while saying she would continue to stand by her own positions. She described herself as a “Zionist Democrat” and a “Democratic labor capitalist.”
El-Sayed, now the Democratic nominee for Senate in Michigan, has rejected the socialist label while backing progressive policies including abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending U.S. military aid to Israel and establishing Medicare for all.
