Tornadoes leave tens of thousands without power in Southeast Michigan

The National Weather Service confirmed Friday that three tornadoes struck Southeast Michigan after severe weather hit Metro Detroit communities. An EF-0 tornado damaged a park in Lincoln Park, while an EF-2 tornado near Meldrum and Benson streets in Detroit damaged homes, industrial buildings and power lines.

About 450,000 customers were affected since Wednesday, according to DTE Energy. As of 7:50 p.m. Saturday, 57,421 customers remained without service while roughly 4,000 utility workers worked on restoration.

DTE urged residents to avoid cleanup until crews assess downed power lines and to keep generators outdoors. The utility said it aimed to restore power to 90% to 92% of customers by Saturday night.
