Trial against former Michigan House Speaker delayed again

The embezzlement trial against former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield has been pushed back once again, with prosecutors planning to announce charges on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The charges stem from allegations that Chatfield misused state, campaign, and nonprofit funds for personal gain, diverting money from the Peninsula Fund, his political action committees, and the Michigan House budget for personal use, including paying personal credit card expenses and seeking improper mileage reimbursements.

In April 2024, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel charged Chatfield with several felonies, including conducting a criminal enterprise and multiple counts of embezzlement and conspiracy. Chatfield's wife Stephanie pleaded guilty in June to one felony count of embezzlement from a non-profit between $200 and $1,000, and was sentenced to probation. If she successfully completes her probation term, the charge will be dismissed.
