Trump backs data centers as candidates face growing voter backlash

President Donald Trump continued promoting artificial intelligence data centers as engines of jobs, tax revenue and national security, even as candidates in competitive races across the country distance themselves from the issue.

Opposition has grown over concerns about electricity costs, water use, pollution, noise, tax breaks and changes to local communities. The Senate Republicans’ campaign arm warned that anger over data centers could threaten a seat in Ohio, where Republican Sen. Jon Husted faces attacks tied to the issue.

Candidates in Nevada, Texas and other states are proposing tighter rules, including limits on tax incentives and requirements that developers pay for their power and water. Trump has supported streamlining construction while saying companies should protect consumers from higher utility bills.
