Trump says Iran talks to resume after calling off planned strike

Diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz accelerated Sunday after President Donald Trump called off a planned attack on Iran, with Tehran saying negotiations with Oman were nearing completion.

Trump said Saturday that he canceled the attack after Iran and other Middle Eastern countries requested a pause. He said the sides had agreed on broad terms that included reopening the strait and ending Iran’s nuclear threat.

Trump said negotiations with Iran would resume Monday afternoon and said the United States remained prepared to act militarily if needed. Iranian officials also held calls with counterparts in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan about regional stability and political solutions.

No deal has been reached, but a mediation proposal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, halt attacks across the region and have the United States end its naval blockade on Iran and allow Tehran to export oil under a tentative ceasefire deal.
