U.S. could not verify Israeli warnings of Iranian plots against Trump

U.S. intelligence officials could not independently verify several Israeli warnings over the past year that Iran intended to assassinate President Donald Trump, according to a current U.S. official and two former officials.

The warnings included possible plots involving a sniper, a knife attack at a public event and, before a NATO summit in Ankara in July, a possible missile threat against Air Force One. Turkish intelligence also lacked evidence to corroborate the NATO-related claim, a Turkish official said.

White House officials and the Secret Service still took precautions, including moving Trump to a different aircraft for his flight out of Turkey. The warnings came during heightened U.S.-Iran tensions and amid differences between U.S. and Israeli intelligence assessments on Iran.
